We look at each participant as part of the HMIR family with no preconceived notions about you other than your willingness to put forth 100% effort into changing the trajectory of your life.
We will provide you with the necessary skills to learn baking, how to start your own business and develop a style unique to you. We will also provide transitional services to help you deal with the day to day challenges you face on this newest journey in your life.
We have skilled instructors to guide you in the learning process, contracted experts in the field who will create a safe space for you to discuss your challenges, but more importantly celebrate your accomplishments.
You will leave our program with employment or your own business after completion of the intensive 8 week program.

OUR STORY
Helping Men In Recovery, Inc. was developed to fill the gap for individuals who have overcome their addiction to drugs and/or alcohol.
Our philosphy is that everyone has an opportunity to press the reset button and forge a limitless future with a new beginning.
OUR VISION
Over the next five years, we envision that Fresh Start will have launched nearly 150 individuals into a new baking career as Owner/ Operator or as an employee of one of the local market areas.
This program will have increased the contribution to the local economy while minimizing state resources on those incarcerated.
OUR PURPOSE
Our intent is to create an environment that is nonjudgmental, supportive and empowers individuals to attain the necessary skills to take care of themselves and their families.
Each participant will learn the fundamentals of baking, receive supportive services for longevity in their careers as bakers.
Program/Eligibility
Fresh Start is a eight week program that provides services and training on the essentials of baking to individuals who desire a career in baking as either an entrepreneur or as a baker with a local bakery in Fulton County and other counties in proximity such as Cobb, Dekalb, Douglas and Gwinnett. It is a vigorous four day program, Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 3:30 pm.
There are a limited number of slots as the Academy will service about 36 individuals a year with a blend of classroom work on the fundamentals of baking, test prep for the Serv Safe Certification, Entrepreneurial Business Basics, LIfe Skills, Job Skills, Internship Experience and Transitional Coaching with weekly Chop It Up Sessions all culminating in a graduation ceremony and job placement/entrepreneur venture.

The targeted participant for this program:
-
Is aged 18 to 60 years old;

Has a history of substance abuse;

Has been drug and alcohol free for 6 months prior to Academy enrollment;

Has been recently released from a correctional institution who is actively engaged in a reentry program; or
-
Is involved in a drug recovery program; or
-
Is a resident of a local shelter; or
-
Is a participant in a Workforce Development program.

Participants once accepted will be provided with orientation, uniforms inckluding slip resistant shoes, a chef hat, Personal Protective Equipment and Academy Guidelines.

Referrals will come from local probation/parole offices, community based organizations, Substance Abuse Recovery Programs, Homeless/Transitional Shelters, et cetera.
